Data governance principles • Last updated: September 2026
Our data-governance approach

Janadesh Labs works across electoral research, field operations, surveys, communication and campaign management. Data is therefore treated according to its source, purpose, sensitivity, access requirement and retention need. Public/official election data, client-confidential data, survey data, operational data and ordinary website enquiries should not be treated as if they are the same category.

Data categories

Our work may involve: official/public electoral datasets; aggregate constituency and booth results; public demographic and geographic information; survey responses; authorised field reports; client-supplied operational data; campaign task and incident logs; business contact information; website enquiries; and technical/account information for authorised systems.

Purpose limitation and minimisation

Projects should collect or use only information reasonably necessary for a defined research, operational, contractual, security or compliance purpose. Teams should avoid collecting personal information merely because it may be available, and should not repurpose project data for unrelated uses without an appropriate basis and authorisation.

Aggregate electoral intelligence

Constituency and booth-level analysis may use lawful public data and authorised operational inputs. Aggregate patterns can support research and resource planning, but they should not be converted into unsupported claims about a named individual’s political preference. Janadesh Labs does not intend to infer or assign individual political preference, caste/community political propensity or similar sensitive political labels to individual voters for public research.

Survey and field data

Survey projects should document the purpose, target population, fieldwork period and relevant methodology. Where respondent-level information is not required for analysis or follow-up, reporting should favour aggregation, de-identification or controlled access. Field teams should receive only the information necessary for their authorised role.

Client-provided data

Clients remain responsible for having the authority and lawful basis to provide data to Janadesh Labs. Project agreements may specify permitted uses, access, retention, return/deletion and security responsibilities. Janadesh Labs may refuse data or requested processing that appears unnecessary, unlawfully obtained or outside the agreed project scope.

Access control

Non-public project data should be available only to authorised personnel with a legitimate work requirement. Role-based permissions, strong credentials, account removal when access is no longer required and controlled sharing should be used where appropriate.

Storage, transfer and backups

Reasonable safeguards should be applied to stored and transmitted project information. The exact technical controls may vary by project and provider. Teams should avoid transferring confidential datasets through unauthorised personal channels when approved project systems are available.

Retention and deletion

Retention should reflect project purpose, contractual obligations, legal requirements and operational necessity. When information is no longer reasonably required, it should be deleted, anonymised, archived with restricted access or returned to the client as appropriate to the project.

Security incidents

Suspected unauthorised access, loss, disclosure or misuse of protected project information should be reported internally without undue delay so that access can be contained, facts assessed, records preserved and any legally required notification or client communication can be handled appropriately.

Data quality and source labels

Election-cycle statistics should retain their source and reference period. Historical figures should not be relabelled as current. Operational observations and survey findings should be distinguishable from official statistics.
